A "Mission Critical" Topic: IT-Security - Interesting presentations at the 9th Security Forum 2011 in Hagenberg
Many interesting presentations were given during the 9th Security Forum on April 6th in Hagenberg, Austria. Austrian an international experts delivered important speeches to the topic IT-Security.
The conference visited by app. 200 attendees also opened the floor for many interesting technical discussions and networking talks with vendors of products and services increasing IT-Security.
Beside the lecture about „Cyber War and is relevance for strategic important ICT-Systems” given by Mag. Walter Unger from the Austrian Ministry for Inner Security and the Keynote “Beyond Security Awareness: Achieving culture and avoiding fatigue” delivered by Prof. Steven Furnell, University of Plymouth, especially the contribution about “Physical Intrusion Security in the IT area” given by Thomas Hackner was highly interesting. Especially the last mentioned speech focused on a “simple” to implement, but often not considered part of security awareness which often are the root cause for disasters.
Astonishing was that the lecure about comparisons of the German and Austrian Law situation regarding protecting personal data have been joined only by 9 people. Maybe this can be seen as an indicator for the “relevance” of the topic”? Or as indicator for the fact that the real attacks to the protection of personal data nowadays are coming from the massive collectors of personal data like Google, Facebook and Co.

Process Based Project Management - An Integrated Tool for the whole Life Cycle: in-Step from microTOOL
During a half day workshop in Vienna on March 24th 2011 microTOOL, a German company, informed about the powerful toolset „in-Step“.
Using in-Step offers now the chance to introduce the integrated tool supported introduction of process based project management based on various process models like V-Model XT, SCRUM, Hermes, Automotive SPICE or PRINCE2.
Impressive to see are the features of in-Step to be integrated in the Microsoft Office Environment as well as in Visual Studio 2010. (Soon there will be available also the integration in Eclipse)
Therefore in-Step is really an asset for “Process Based Project Management”, seldom seen before, as in-Step supports the whole life cycle of software engineering from requirements engineering to all steps in development specifications up to the testing and maintenance phases of projects integrated in a team collaboration friendly environment and also supported by metrics. A highlight for followers of approaches like CMMI, as also requirement traceability can be implemented by this tool in an effective way.
Positive to remark is, that during the workshop micoTOOL not just has shown presentation slides. In impressive show cases from the real world software development the practical use of in-Step was shown. This presentation was also supported by a practical experience report of the R&D head from KAPSCH, where in-Step is used successfully.
Summarizing, the workshop created the impression, with in-Step we can see the best integrated tool for process based project management currently on the market.

Our World 2.0 ... An interesting Panel Discussion in Vienna
The Event „Our World 2.0 – How Enterprises can manage the Future“, organized by AWO was as interesting as expected. First the initial keynote given by Miachel Schrage from MIT and also later the panel discussion of experts like Monika Kircher-Kohl (CEO of Infineon), Sabine Herlitschka from FFG and Christian Kesberg (Austrian Chamber of Commerce in New York) moderated by Hannelore Veith, ORF.
Already the keynote set the focus of the evening to the major impact of Innovation as base for successful managing the future where Schrage asked the auditorium provocative questions to participating entrepreneurs who often not know who their most innovative customers are.
From an intercultural perspective the ideas Monika Kircher-Kohl mentioned were outstanding: she told about the positive experiences Infineon made by sending teams of engineers for some month to China coming back from there with so many (also monetary wise) valuable ideas for innovations.
Another positive result of the event was that much discussion with the app. 250 participants took place. Most ideas discussed have mentioned different approaches how in Europe and in USA innovation is managed where in US much more risk is accepted to start innovations.
And Schrage added some results of his research that successful innovations are not a question of risk capital or even governmental funding of innovation, the key element is the spirit of innovations by entrepreneurs. But when talking about innovation, not the technical innovation is the critical issue. The innovation must create value for the customer. And as one example he mentioned Apple, a company who has one of the lowest R&D budgets among the high-tech companies but innovations with high value for the customers.
An extremely exiting, interesting and inspiring event organized by the Chamber of Commerce. WKO
